About: Dr Martin Thomas is a cultural historian interested in place, representations of landscape and narratives of cross-cultural encounter especially in photography and the work of early Australian anthropologists. His acclaimed history, The Artificial Horizon: Imagining the Blue Mountains (Melbourne University Publishing, 2003), won the Gleebooks Prize for Literary and Cultural Criticism and the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards the following year. His background is as visual arts writer, oral historian for the National Library and producer of over 15 documentaries for ABC radio since 1991. His documentary This is Jimmie Barker and I love you Jimmie won many awards. Currently he is Research Fellow at the Australian National University.
