Talk: Axel Poignant’s role in Australian modernist, photography Martin Thomas

About: Dr Martin Thomas is a cultural historian interested in place, representations of landscape and narratives of cross-cultural encounter especially in photography and the work of early Australian anthropologists. His acclaimed history The Artificial Horizon: Imagining the Blue Mountains (Melbourne University Publishing, 2003) won the Gleebooks Prize for Literary and Cultural Criticism and NSW Premier’s Literary Awards the following year. His background is a visual arts writer, oral historian for the National Library and producer of over 15 documentaries for ABC radio since 1991. His documentary This is Jimmie Barker and I love you Jimmie won many awards. Currently he is Research Fellow at the Australian National University.
