Curator in Residence: Djon Mundine
Djon Mundine’s career has helped revolutionise the criticism and display of contemporary Aboriginal art. He was art and craft advisor at Milingimbi in the Crocodile Islands in 1979 and curator at Bula-bula Arts in Ramingining in Arnhemland and has contributed to biennales worldwide. He originated Australia’s great artwork, the Aboriginal Memorial, comprising 200 painted poles by 43 artists from Ramingining, each symbolising a year since the arrival in 1788 of British colonists. The Memorial was central to the 1988 Biennale of Sydney and is on permanent display at the National Gallery of Australia. His landmark show and publication The Native Born (MCA, 1996) presented the rich variety of artistic work from Ramingining community and pioneered the showing of both ceremonial and utilitarian weaving. This led to Robyn Djunginy’s inclusion in the ‘The Everyday’ the 1998 Sydney Biennale.
